Cyber Crime

Reporting

If you are concerned that you have been a victim of cyber crime, report it to ActionFraud on 0300 123 2040, or online at https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ .

Once a cyber crime has been reported we can then start investigating.

What we do

Our Cyber Crime Unit provides a holistic approach to tackling a crime type that only a few years ago remained unseen, unreported and undetected. Our focus is on addressing cyber dependent crimes and their impact upon businesses, groups, charities and some key critical national infrastructure organisations based in the South West. Such crimes include network intrusion, ransomware and denial of service attacks.

Our team works within four key areas:

Pursue
In the South West we are one of the country’s leading investigative units. In addition to investigating crimes that have been committed, we are proactive in using the latest tools and techniques to identify those cyber criminals that are causing harm to our communities.

Prevent
We have a passionate team whose aim is to divert primarily young and gifted individuals from committing cyber-crime to lawful and productive pathways. We engage closely with schools and partner agencies and run bespoke interactive sessions across the South West.

If you know of any young people who may benefit from our input, use our Prevent 'Cyber Futures' referral form.

Protect
Our network of Cyber Protect officers offer advice, guidance and provide examples of cyber crimes we have investigated where simple steps could have prevented an organisation from becoming a victim. Our advice is free, generally low cost to implement and only from trusted sources such as the National Cyber Security Centre.

Our Protect leaflet is a great starting point for advice and useful resources.

Prepare
Providing advice and guidance through desk-top exercises and innovative messaging preparing organisations for a cyber incident. Sadly, it is very much a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ an organisation will become a victim. Business Continuity, Incident Response, Media and Reputational damage limitation are key.

All these initiatives are there to protect the South West from cyber crime. We are always eager to hear from anyone with a view of what we do, and what we can do to help. You can contact us via email at [email protected], or for advice/guidance/events use [email protected].

To stay up to date with the latest cyber security advice and guidance, we also recommend signing up to our fortnightly Regional Cyber Briefing e-newsletter, or our more in-depth technical monthly Cyber Intelligence Report
